President Michael D Higgins was in Cork
The thousands of people who died in the famine were remembered at the National Commemoration at UCC in collaboration with Cork City Council today.
President Michael D Higgins, Tanaiste Simon Coveney and the international diplomatic corp were in Cork for the commemmoration which was free and open to the public.
President Higgins unveiled a plaque to commemorate the local people who died during The Great Hunger.
