Gardai discovered the body of a woman at a residence in Wilton, Cork last night (Fri).
Gardai and the emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 10pm.
A woman in her 30's was found with what are understood to be stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man, aged in his early 40s, was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at a Garda station in Cork City centre.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been contacted and the body remains at the scene pending an investigation.
A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed.
A post mortem will be carried out later at Cork University Hospital.
