A third pitch inspection saw the Sunday evening game called off.
The League of Ireland is being called on to review its processes for assessing pitch conditions.
It is after Cork City’s away game against Shamrock Rovers was postponed less than an hour before kick off.
The pitch at Tallaght Stadium was inspected at 11.15am and again at 4pm and it was deemed playable ahead of the 6 o clock kick off.
However, following a torrential downpour that came after the second inspection, the pitch became unplayable.
A League of Ireland statement issued last evening included an apology to supporters for the disappointment caused.
Cork City FC said that they are extremely disappointed that their game was called off so close to kick off, adding that they in particular regret the impact it had on their supporters who had travelled long distances to attend the premier division fixture.
In a post on social media, the club said that at all times they made clear their preference for the game to go ahead, including being willing to delay kick-off.
FORAS - a body representing supporters of Cork City FC - has called on the League of Ireland to review its processes for assessing pitch conditions.
In a statement, FORAS said that hundreds of supporters incurred expense and spent hours travelling to Dublin, having twice been assured the fixture would go ahead.
