Businesses in the city centre are outraged at the lack of progress on the flood defence scheme that was proposed back in 2009. Former Minister with responsibility for the OPW Brian Hayes said that the project would be shovel ready in 2015. Last year Minister Simon Harris indicated that construction would begin later this year but the Cork Business Association believes it won't actually start until next year and will take up to six years to complete.
