A fishing boat with one person onboard got into difficulty.
Courtmacsherry Bay in West Cork was the scene of a rescue operation yesterday morning.(Wed)
The RNLI Lifeboat Val Adnams responded to a fishing boat in distress just after 11am.
The 18-foot vessel, with one person aboard, had suffered a mechanical failure just off Howe Strand.
Once alongside, the lifeboat crew sorted out the engine problem, allowing the fishing boat to continue to safety.
It was a significant day for Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Station, as it marked the 110th anniversary of the sinking of the cruise ship “Lusitania” just 12 miles off the Seven Heads coastline on the 7th May 1915 with a tragic loss of 1,200 lives. The Courtmacsherry Lifeboat while then based at Barryspoint responded to that callout and had to row to the scene of the tragedy, as it was a totally calm day and their sails were of no use. After today’s callout, the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat under Coxswain Mark Gannon proceeded with their annual trip to the wreck site of the Lusitania and poignantly laid a wreath and said a prayer for those that were lost in the worst ever tragedy off our coastline. Today also marked Mark Gannon’s 49th year as a volunteer Coxswain and crew person at Courtmacsherry Lifeboat Station having been out on his first callout in 1976.
