A consultant in emergency medicine in Cork says the rise in assaults on healthcare workers is worrying but nothing new.

It was revealed last week that at least 10 assaults take place in Irish hospitals every day, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

The nurses union appeared before an Oireachtas Health Committee last week calling for greater supports to ensure the safety and welfare of its members.

According to a spokersperson from the INMO over 9,000 incidents occurred between January 2021 and October 2022, almost double the figure recorded by the HSE.

Dr Chris Luke says there are some new areas of concern on this issue.
