Experienced drivers of 40, 50 years, are having to 12 lessons, resit a theory and pass a driving test.

The number of learner drivers waiting on a driving test date has reached 81,000 with an average wait time of 26.9 weeks according to the RSA.

This comes after a West-Cork deputy says experienced drivers from other countries should not have to take an Irish driving-test from scratch.

Independent Ireland's Michael Collins says it puts unnecessary strain on the system, and adding to the backlog for young Irish drivers wanting to take their test:

"There is a huge problem obviously for in particular young people who are looking for driving tests today. You're talking about up to 10 months which is an outrageous situation that young people find themselves in. Obviously you know not easy to find accommodation for college goers. They want to use the car, they want to pass their driving test and they can't get a driving tester."

"So we have to look at ways of at least alleviating that problem to a degree. At the moment we have people coming in from all over the world that have driven, they contact me regularly. They've driven in America, they've driven all over the world but when they come in here now they have to get an Irish license."

"To get an Irish license they have to go through the same system, the theory test, the 12 lessons and the driving test. These are people that are 40, 50 years driving, experienced drivers. So we need to look at areas where a bit of common sense has to apply."
