Renters looking for a new place are extremely worried because of a lack of supply
There’s a stark contrast between the amount of short-term lets available and long-term homes to rent in Cork.
Over 600 properties in Cork were listed as short-term lets on Airbnb at the end of last year, compared with around 140 long-term on the likes of Daft.
Edel Conlon, Southern Regional Manager with Threshold, says it's a huge concern for renters; "According to the last Daft report, there were just over 360 homes available to rent in Munster and as I said about 140 in Cork. So these are rock-bottom numbers and there is a huge concern for people in the rental market going forward.
Threshold is calling on government to pass legislation that would allow Failte Ireland to create a register of short-term lets that could free up housing.
Edel Conlon explains what this would mean; "The new bill would mean that property owners will need to register their property with Failte Ireland and they will be given a registration number when they do that."
