The number of unaccompanied learner drivers on the roads is rising year on year.

Almost 5 thousand unaccompanied learner drivers have been caught on our roads so far this year.

That's up from 2,511 in 2019.

The Irish Times reports that more than 24 thousand vehicles have been seized from unaccompanied learner drivers since the road safety laws were strengthened in 2018.

The Clancy amendment allows Gardai to impound vehicle while learners face a 160 euro fine and two penalty points.

According to the CSO  357,524 learner permits are held by drivers.
